BARÜ Hosts Panel on the Future of Agriculture

Bartın University (BARÜ) hosted a panel on the future of agriculture as part of the “Feed the Future” project. Participants also toured the greenhouses located at the Ağdacı Campus as an example of best practices.

The project, supported by the European Union and the Republic of Turkey, involves multiple stakeholders, including the Western Black Sea Development Agency (BAKKA), Bartın University, Bartın Science Education Association, and the Bartın Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry.

During the panel, Osman Bahadır Kalecik, Coordinator of the BAKKA Investment Support Office and General Coordinator of the Feed the Future Project, emphasized the increasing importance of greenhouse activities in Bartın. He discussed training provided to farmers on smart greenhouse systems and the planned initiatives for their implementation.

Dr. Cevdet Gümüş, a faculty member from the Plant and Animal Production Department at Bartın Vocational School, explained that they aimed to address shortcomings in agricultural production and greenhouse activities. He also provided information about the climate control mechanisms of BARÜ's smart greenhouses, which are the first of their kind in the region.

Physics teacher and robotics coding trainer Yücel Yüzlü illustrated the role of the Bartın Science Education Association in the project. He shared examples of training provided to high school students on topics such as robotics coding, soilless farming, and smart greenhouse installation.

Oğulcan Dönmez, representative of the Future Studies Association and assistant for the Feed the Future project, detailed the technical and administrative aspects of the initiative. He also highlighted the project’s goal of increasing women’s employment in agriculture.
