Science Meets Society: The People of Bartın Learn About the Ancient City of Amastris

Through its “Science Café” event, Bartın University (BARU) took participants of all ages in Amasra on a historical journey, introducing them to the mysterious past of the 2,000-year-old ancient city of Amastris.

As part of the “Science Communication Office” initiative launched under the leadership of the Council of Higher Education (YÖK) to make scientific knowledge accessible to wider segments of society, BARU met with the people of Bartın in Amasra.

BARU Sheds Light on History in Amasra

Under YÖK’s coordination, nearly 150 universities across Türkiye organized Science Café events simultaneously in 81 provinces. Within this framework, BARU hosted a talk titled “More Than Meets the Eye: The Ancient City of Amastris” at the amphitheater of Amasra Barış Akarsu Culture Park. The event was attended by Amasra Mayor Recai Çakır and BARU Rector Prof. Dr. Ahmet Akkaya, with Prof. Dr. Fatma Bağdatlı Çam from the Faculty of Letters, Department of Art History providing insights about the ancient city.

Rector Akkaya: “We Recognize the Importance of Connecting People of All Ages with Science”

In his opening remarks, Rector Prof. Dr. Ahmet Akkaya emphasized the importance of science communication: “We are aware of how vital it is to bring science closer to society and to ensure that people of all ages connect with it. With the theme ‘Science Everywhere,’ we are carrying scientific knowledge beyond the university campus into daily life.”

The talk was moderated by Dr. Handan Bilici from the Department of Art History. Prof. Dr. Fatma Bağdatlı Çam stated: “Founded by Queen Amastris, this ancient city is now witnessing its revival centuries later. During the Roman Empire, Amastris thrived as one of the significant port cities of the Black Sea. Excavations in its public area, which includes a theater and a bazaar, have uncovered a monumental colonnaded structure from the Roman era.”

The session, which drew great interest from participants of all ages, concluded with a Q&A.
