BARÜ’s “Sustainable Salep Production” Project Successfully Completed

The outcomes achieved and future objectives were evaluated at the closing meeting of the “Sustainable Salep Production” project, implemented by Bartın University (BARÜ) with the support of the Western Black Sea Development Agency (BAKKA).
The “Sustainable Salep Production” project, carried out by Bartın University (BARÜ) with the support of the Western Black Sea Development Agency (BAKKA) under the coordination of the General Directorate of Development Agencies of the Ministry of Industry and Technology, has been completed. At the closing meeting hosted by BARÜ Rector Prof. Dr. Ahmet Akkaya, participants were informed about the activities carried out throughout the project, the training programs organized, practices aimed at protecting the salep orchid, and the results achieved.
The closing meeting was attended by Bartın Deputy Governor Mehmet Anıl Çolak, Bartın Deputy Mayor Sançar Biçer, Acting Secretary General of the Bartın Special Provincial Administration Ayhan Kuş, BAKKA Secretary General Mehmet Çetinkaya, Bartın Provincial Director of Agriculture and Forestry Murat Türkmen, Mayor of Kozcağız Mustafa Karaman, and BARÜ Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Yafes Yıldız.
Supported under BAKKA’s Anadoludakiler Program, the project was carried out by Asst. Prof. Dr. Cevdet Gümüş from the Department of Plant and Animal Production at BARÜ Bartın Vocational School. Within the scope of the project, various activities were conducted to protect the naturally growing and endangered salep orchid in Bartın, promote sustainable production methods, and pass local production culture on to future generations. One of the project’s major outputs was the tissue culture laboratory, where studies were carried out to produce seedlings from salep orchid seeds obtained from their natural habitat. Through these studies, the project aimed both to contribute to the conservation of natural salep orchid resources and to introduce producers to alternative and sustainable production techniques.
The meeting also emphasized the importance of raising awareness about the protection of the salep orchid and transferring the knowledge and experience gained through the project to local producers.
In his closing remarks, Rector Akkaya said, “As Bartın University, we consider it important to utilize our scientific knowledge and research infrastructure for the protection of our region’s natural and agricultural resources. Protecting the salep orchid, one of Bartın’s important natural assets, developing sustainable production methods, and transferring the knowledge gained to our producers are of great importance. I believe that the work carried out within the scope of the project will continue to contribute to sustainable production in the future. I would like to thank Asst. Prof. Dr. Cevdet Gümüş, who contributed to the implementation of this meaningful project, as well as all our stakeholders who provided their support.”
