System Developed for Restless Legs Syndrome in Partnership with BARU Registered as a Utility Model

An innovative sock system developed jointly by Bartın University (BARU) and Yıldız Technical University (YTU) for restless legs syndrome has been registered as a utility model by the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office (TÜRKPATENT).

A new system targeting restless legs syndrome, a common health condition, has been developed through a collaboration between Bartın University (BARU) and Yıldız Technical University (YTU). The “Sock System Applying Pressure, Vibration and Transcutaneous Electrical Stimulation in Different Combinations for Restless Legs Syndrome” has been granted utility model registration by the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office (TÜRKPATENT). The invention was developed by Asst. Prof. Mehmet Emin Aktan from the Department of Mechatronics Engineering at BARÜ Faculty of Engineering, Architecture and Design, together with Prof. Dr. Gülçin Benbir Şenel, Prof. Dr. Erhan Akdoğan, Prof. Dr. Derya Karadeniz and Merve Aktan Süzgün. The wearable system integrates pressure, vibration and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) methods.

Changes in leg movements are monitored by sensors

The system includes vibration motors and inertial measurement unit (IMU) sensors that can be positioned at a point on the lower leg determined by a physician according to the patient’s symptoms. An electric air pump supplies air to an inflatable cuff surrounding the lower leg, enabling controlled pressure to be applied to the leg. A pressure sensor measures the pressure exerted by the cuff, while the IMU sensors detect both periodic and non-periodic leg movements and transmit the recorded movement data to the controller.

Different stimulation methods are applied in a controlled manner

The controller automatically processes the movement data obtained from the IMU sensors, calculates the frequency and periods of the movements, and classifies them as periodic or non-periodic. Based on the periodicity of the leg movements, the system enables pressure, vibration and transcutaneous electrical stimulation to be applied to patients accordingly. It also monitors and records changes in leg movements.

Stating that BARÜ continues to carry out studies that transform scientific knowledge and technology into societal benefit, Rector Prof. Dr. Ahmet Akkaya congratulated Asst. Prof. Mehmet Emin Aktan and the project team on the invention being registered as a utility model by TÜRKPATENT.
