15 Nisan 2026
As part of the Bartın University (BARÜ) Science Café meetings, Rector Prof. Dr. Ahmet Akkaya came together with high school students and highlighted the importance of effective listening in the age of noise.
The Science Café meetings organized by the Bartın University (BARÜ) Office of Science Communication continue. In this context, BARÜ Rector Prof. Dr. Ahmet Akkaya met with students at Bartın Şehit Mustafa Yaman Anatolian Imam Hatip High School. In the event titled “Learning to Listen in the Age of Noise,” the role of effective listening skills in daily life was emphasized.
In the program, which was attended by many students, Rector Akkaya began his speech by explaining the fundamental role of listening in human life. Addressing the students, he stated:
“The first skill we learn is listening. Without listening, we cannot develop speaking, reading, or writing. If we are not good listeners, we cannot become good speakers. We are living in an incredible age of noise. Unlike 50 years ago, none of us are surrounded by birdsong or the soothing rustling of trees. We are no longer in nature but in an artificial world created by humans. In our time, there were not many distractions while studying. However, today you are faced with multiple stimuli.”

Emphasizing that listening is the foundation of effective communication, Rector Akkaya added:
“Mobile phones, environmental noise, and social interactions can cause distractions. This situation also increases the tendency toward superficial listening. Do not listen casually, superficially, or merely to find faults. Every act of listening must have a purpose. Let none of your actions be without purpose.”

Students who responded to the questions posed by Rector Akkaya had the opportunity to reflect on their own listening habits. In the interactive and friendly atmosphere of the program, students also shared their views on attention span and classroom focus.
The program concluded with a commemorative group photo.
