At Bartın University (BARÜ), while the historical process of Palestine from the past to the present was explained, attention was drawn to the humanitarian tragedy occurring in the region.
Bartın University (BARÜ) continues its efforts to draw attention to the humanitarian tragedy in Palestine and to increase social awareness. In this direction, a program titled “The Geography of Lethal and Immortal Identities: Palestine’s Past, Present, and Future” was organized by the Career Planning Application and Research Center. Prof. Dr. Hasan Hüseyin Güneş from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Department of History, took part as a speaker at the event, where the Palestinian issue was addressed in its various dimensions.
Rector Akkaya emphasized the importance of continuing the boycott
Speaking at the opening of the program, BARÜ Rector Prof. Dr. Ahmet Akkaya stated:
"Today, we will discuss the geography of lethal and immortal identities. Here, the poet Mehmet Akif İnan comes to mind: 'I saw Al-Aqsa Mosque in my dream. It was like a child and it was crying.' For 2.5 years, an atrocity that defies humanity has been inflicted upon Al-Aqsa Mosque, as expressed in these lines. At this point, the more concrete steps we take, the more valuable they are. Please, let us continue the boycott at all times. Children have died, women have died, families have been torn apart. Let us not forget the suffering being experienced; let us implement the boycott."
Evaluating the Palestinian issue within the framework of collective memory, human dignity, law, and conscience, Prof. Dr. Hasan Hüseyin Güneş explained how a people are being made invisible in their own homeland and how, despite this, they preserve their identity, memory, and will to live.
“A struggle for identity, memory, and humanity is taking place in Palestine”
Evaluating the concepts of "lethal identity" and "immortal identity" in his speech, Prof. Dr. Güneş said:
"Lethal identity is based on seeing a people not as human beings, but as a threat, a security problem, or an obstacle that must be eliminated. In contrast, immortal identity persists in the keys kept despite destroyed houses, in the memories kept alive despite evacuated villages, in the names of lost children, and in the determination of a people to make their voice heard by the world."
The humanitarian tragedy in Gaza was explained in detail during the program. It was stated that the bombardments, forced migration, hunger, thirst, and the destruction of hospitals, schools, places of worship, and homes cannot be seen merely as a consequence of war. It was also emphasized that the destruction of a school eliminates the future of children, the striking of a hospital takes away the wounded's right to life, and the demolition of a home erases family memory and the sense of security.
The program, which was followed with great interest, concluded with the message that the Palestinian issue is a test of justice, law, and conscience for humanity, and that efforts to increase awareness on this matter must be sustained.
