BARÜ’s Project will reveal the Neuroscientific Impacts of Peer Bullying
4 Haziran 2026
A project supported under the TÜBİTAK (Scientific and Technological Research Council of Türkiye) 3501 Career Development Program at Bartın University (BARÜ) will examine the effects of peer bullying on brain functioning in children and adolescents through a multidisciplinary perspective.

The project, led by Dr. Samet Çelik from the Department of Psychology within the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at Bartın University (BARÜ), has been awarded funding under the TÜBİTAK 3501 Career Development Program. Titled “Electrophysiological Foundations of Peer Bullying: EEG Oscillations and Graph Theory-Based Cortical Network Patterns During Socio-Emotional Stimuli,” the project will investigate how peer bullying affects the brain functioning of children and adolescents.

The project will be supervised by Prof. Dr. Serap Aydın from the Faculty of Medicine at Hacettepe University. Dr. Gülşah Kaçmaz Ekici from the Department of Guidance and Psychological Counseling at BARÜ’s Faculty of Education will contribute as a researcher, while Research Assistant Havva Nur Taş Akdeniz will participate as a scholarship holder. Within the scope of the study, EEG measurements and advanced network analyses will be used to evaluate how cortical dynamics are shaped by experience in individuals who were exposed to peer bullying during early life.

The project, which investigates the neurobiological mechanisms underlying peer bullying—one of today’s significant social problems—has succeeded in securing funding at the maximum budget limit available under the program. Prepared with a multidisciplinary approach, the study brings together developmental psychology, neuroscience, and psychophysiology. The findings are expected to contribute to preventive and supportive practices in the field of child and adolescent mental health.

Emphasizing that BARÜ conducts innovative and interdisciplinary research aimed at addressing contemporary challenges, Prof. Dr. Rector Ahmet Akkaya congratulated Dr. Samet Çelik and the project team on receiving TÜBİTAK support and wished them continued success.
