Yayın Tarihi : 22/07/2025
A TÜBİTAK-supported project at Bartın University (BARU) will shed light on the historical development of viticulture in Anatolia through the examination of remains uncovered in the archaeological excavations at the ancient city of Pompeiopolis.

The project, led by Dr. Mustafa Nuri Tatbul from the Department of Art History, Faculty of Letters, has been granted funding under TÜBİTAK’s 1002-A Rapid Support Program. Entitled “The Use of Grapes (Vitis vinifera L.) in the Medieval Period at Pompeiopolis”, the study will analyze carbonized grape remains retrieved from archaeological excavations using archaeobotanical and morphometric methods. The aim is to investigate the ways grape species were used in the past and their economic significance.

The research will focus on plant remains obtained from a residential structure dating between the 6th and 10th centuries AD at the ancient city of Pompeiopolis, located in Taşköprü district of Kastamonu province. Based on these original findings, the project will detail the historical and social evolution of viticulture in Anatolia.
