Bartın University (BARU), through a TÜBİTAK-supported project, will join the 2026 Antarctic Science Expedition to search for antiviral drug candidates in the polar flora.

The expedition, held under the auspices of the Presidency of the Republic of Türkiye, coordinated by the Ministry of Industry and Technology and TÜBİTAK MAM KARE, will take place in 2026 with BARU as a participant.

Led by Dr. Rizvan İmamoğlu from BARU’s Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics, the project titled “Investigation of Potential New Drug Candidate Molecules Against Viral Proteases from Certain Algae and Plants Obtained in the Polar Region” was accepted under TÜBİTAK KUTUP-1001. The research will focus on plant and macroalgae species unique to the polar region. Research Assistant Gözde Yeşiltaş İmamoğlu from Gebze Technical University’s Department of Bioengineering will also participate. The project will analyze in detail the inhibitory effects of natural compounds derived from these species on certain viral enzymes.
