A new endemic plant species, "Paphlagonia Bellumotu", has been introduced to the scientific world by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bilge Tunçkol and her team from Bartın University (BARU).

Bartın University (BARU) continues to add new species to Turkey's plant diversity. Recently, Associate Professor Dr. Bilge Tunçkol and her team from Ulus Vocational School, who continue their research in botany, discovered a new plant species that grows only in the Horma Canyon in Küre Mountains National Park. This endemic species, called "Paphlagonia Bellumotu," was introduced to the world by appearing in Phytotaxa, an international scientific journal in botany.

The species, consisting of only 80 individuals, will be protected

The plant's only known population consists of approximately 80 individuals and covers only 2 hectares. Therefore, the species, which is at risk of being negatively impacted by ecotourism and forestry activities, is classified as "Endangered" (EN) according to the criteria of the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN). This species, which thrives primarily in rocky habitats, also has potential for use in rock gardens or as groundcover. Efforts to protect the species are planned to begin shortly with the General Directorate of Nature Conservation and National Parks on a species action plan.
