Bartın University (BARÜ) marked the arrival of spring with great enthusiasm through the “Hıdırellez and Nevruz Festival,” featuring a diverse program of cultural, social, and sporting activities.

The event was organized by the BARÜ Department of Health, Culture and Sports in cooperation with the Faculty of Letters, Department of Contemporary Turkish Dialects and Literatures, the Turkish World Studies Club, the International Student Club, and the Archery Club. The opening remarks were delivered by Prof. Dr. Aslı Yazıcı, Dean of the Faculty of Letters, and Ahmet Can Bayazıt, President of the Turkish World Studies Club.

The program continued with vibrant performances by international students studying at BARÜ, who delighted the audience with musical recitals, poetry readings, and traditional dances. A concert by Akdeniz Erbaş, featuring authentic instruments of the Turkic world such as the jaw harp and dombra, added to the festive spirit and was met with great appreciation.

At the university’s lakeside area, the symbolic Hıdırellez and Nevruz fire celebrating the awakening of nature was lit. Participants joyfully leapt over the fire and performed regional dances, creating colorful and lively scenes. Traditional activities such as egg tapping, tug-of-war, and archery demonstrations brought cultural heritage to life, ensuring a day of spirited fun for all.

Adding further cultural significance, an ‘otağ’ a traditional tent with deep roots in Turkish, Altai, and Mongolian folk culture was erected as part of the celebrations. The event concluded with the serving of traditional Uzbek Pilaf to participants, leaving lasting memories of unity, joy, and cultural richness.
