New methods for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease will be tested with BARÜ's Project
16 Eylül 2025
With Bartın University's (BARÜ) project supported by TÜBİTAK, new hybrid compounds will be developed against Alzheimer's disease and their antioxidant effects will be investigated.
The project prepared under the coordination of Prof. Dr. Ayşegül Gümüş from the Bartın University (BARÜ) Faculty of Science, Department of Biotechnology, has been entitled to receive support within the scope of the TÜBİTAK 1002-A Rapid Support Program. With the project titled “Synthesis of New Coumarin-Quinoline Derivatives, Investigation of Cholinesterase Enzyme Inhibition and Antioxidant Effects, and Computational Calculations,” new hybrid compounds will be developed with the aim of neutralizing some enzymes that play a role in Alzheimer's disease. The antioxidant effects of these compounds on disease-related enzymes will be tested through laboratory experiments and computer-aided analyses.
The project team, which includes Prof. Dr. Dursun Kısa from the BARÜ Faculty of Science, Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics, Prof. Dr. Selçuk Gümüş from the Faculty of Engineering, Architecture, and Design, Department of Basic Sciences, and Biotechnology Master's student Burçin Karahan Özdemir, will use innovative methods in their studies.
Providing information about the project, Prof. Dr. Gümüş said, “With our project, we aim to develop new hybrid compounds for the inhibition of acetylcholinesterase and butyrylcholinesterase enzymes, which play an important role in Alzheimer's disease. We will examine the enzyme inhibition capacities and antioxidant effects of these compounds and perform their computer-aided calculations. As a result of our work, we aim to contribute to the treatment of this disease.”
BARÜ Rector Prof. Dr. Ahmet Akkaya congratulated Prof. Dr. Ayşegül Gümüş and the project team for their project aiming to produce new solutions for needs in the field of health and wished them success in their studies.
