A commission including academics from Bartın University (BARU) has made new discoveries about the historical roots of a monumental tree located in Akbaş village of Bartın province.

Continuing its efforts to contribute to the region’s historical and natural heritage, BARU recently took part in a commission formed by the Governorship of Bartın and the Provincial Directorate of Culture and Tourism. The aim was to identify the species and age of a plane tree discovered by chance in Akbaş village. The research team conducted on-site examinations of the tree, which is believed to be among the most magnificent and oldest trees in Türkiye.

A 640-year-old tree discovered in Bartın

Prof. Dr. Barbaros Yaman from the Faculty of Forestry provided technical details about the tree, estimating its age at between 600 and 680 years, with an average of 640 years. He also noted that another monumental tree, estimated to be around 540 years old, was discovered during the field studies.

“There are many trees in the region with monumental characteristics”

Prof. Dr. Erol Kırdar from the Faculty of Forestry explained that the oriental plane tree under review is expected to be officially registered as a monumental tree. He added that the region hosts many forest trees that are either already registered or awaiting registration as monumental trees.
