Meaningful Contribution to Cultural Heritage from BARÜ: The Story of a Centuries-Old Plane Tree Becomes a Book

Through the children’s book “Çınarın Hafızası (Memory of the Plane Tree),” Bartın University (BARÜ) aims to transform a nearly 640-year-old monumental tree discovered in Akbaş Village into a lasting element of cultural heritage.

Bartın University (BARÜ) continues its efforts in line with its vision of preserving and passing on the region’s historical and natural heritage to future generations. The monumental tree discovered in recent months in Akbaş Village in Bartın, estimated to be around 640 years old, has now inspired a meaningful cultural project. Within this framework, a children’s book titled “Çınarın Hafızası” was prepared.

The book was written by Dr. Nihan Temiz from the Department of Information and Records Management, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, with the encouragement and support of BARÜ Rector Prof. Dr. Ahmet Akkaya. Centering on the historical monumental tree, “Çınarın Hafızası” introduces young readers to the concepts of nature, time, and memory. At the same time, the project aims to document the monumental tree—one of Bartın’s natural treasures—as a cultural value.

The work contributes to increasing the visibility of local heritage while fostering awareness among children about respect for nature and the importance of protecting cultural heritage.
