Family and Youth Discussed at Event Held at BARÜ
17 Nisan 2026
At a program organized at Bartın University (BARÜ), the reflections of poet, writer, and academician Ömer Demirbağ on family and youth attracted significant interest.

Bartın University (BARÜ) Women and Family Studies Application and Research Center organized a meaningful conference to address how the relationship between family and youth shapes the future. Held at the İİBF–Faculty of Education Conference Hall on the Kutlubey Campus, the program titled “The Value that Builds the Future: Family and Youth” featured Dr. Ömer Demirbağ from Van Yüzüncü Yıl University, known for his identity as a poet and writer, as the keynote speaker.

“We will continue our work on family and youth.”

Delivering the opening speech, BARÜ Rector Prof. Dr. Ahmet Akkaya stated:

“We must strive to understand how families can better raise the younger generation. The family is the cornerstone of the institutions that make a nation a nation. If the family structure deteriorates, so does the youth, and the future of that country is endangered. As in the ‘Year of the Family’ declared last year, we continue to attach great importance to this issue. I hope you will benefit greatly from the valuable insights of Dr. Ömer Demirbağ and wish you a highly fruitful conference. I also strongly condemn the acts of violence carried out against our educational institutions in Şanlıurfa and Kahramanmaraş, and I extend my condolences to the teachers and students who lost their lives.”

The Value that Builds the Future: Family and Youth

Emphasizing the decisive role of the family institution in shaping individual character, Dr. Ömer Demirbağ stated:

“No matter how much we speak, write, or read about family and youth, it is never enough. These are concepts that require close attention today. The family is a concept unique to human beings; it is the atom of society. Just as the splitting of the atom leads to great disasters, damage to the family, the fundamental unit of society, results in serious consequences, to the point where that society can no longer be sustained. What distinguishes humans from other beings is their need for family.”

Important Messages from Dr. Demirbağ to Youth

Addressing young people, Dr. Demirbağ emphasized:

“The moral values that sustain our society are being trivialized. For example, proverbs, idioms, and rhymes, products of our folkloric culture, form the foundation of our literature and reflect the value system of a society. Today, our literature and history are sometimes used in subtle ways to misguide young people. The aim is to weaken the family and erode family life, particularly through television, social media, and digital platforms. Young people, try to look beyond what you watch and read; read extensively. Speaking is one of the clearest indicators of being human. Your words should elevate both yourself and those around you, and the way to achieve this is through reading.”

The program, which was followed with great interest, concluded with strong participation from students as well as academic and administrative staff.
