BARÜ will seek solutions to floods and droughts owing to the climate change

Yayın Tarihi : 07/04/2023
The project of Bartın University (BARÜ) aiming to reduce the flood and drought risks in Bartın owing to climate change will be supported by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

The project prepared by Bartın University (BARU) within the scope of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) funded by the European Union and the Republic of Turkey was found worthy of support. With the study prepared within the scope of the "Strengthening Climate Change Adaptation in Turkey " applied by the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization, the effects of climate change, which we have felt more and more in recent years, will be minimized.

In the project where Bartın Governorship Special Provincial Administration and Bartın Municipality are the project partners and the General Directorate of State Hydraulic Works and General Directorate of Water Management are the supporting institutions, the adaptation of Bartın Province and Bartın Stream Basin to sudden changes in the water cycle will be strengthened. The project will contribute to the works that will be the continuation of the mobilization initiated at BARU with the declaration of Bartın as a disaster area in the last two consecutive years, which has been experiencing flood and water scarcity problems at the same time caused by climate change. Furthermore, resilience against climate change will be increased, and the water resources and ecosystem of the Bartın Stream Basin will be protected.

Because of the increasing population and the significant decrease in the water resources of the basin, studies will be carried out to strengthen Bartın's struggle against the future water scarcity. Smart systems will also be installed in the Bartın Stream Basin to prevent the loss of life and property caused by climate change. Hence, the people of the region will be warned via early warning systems developed before the negativities that might occur with sudden precipitation. In the project, where mapping and planning activities will be carried out to create adaptation strategies to climate change, pilot applications for rainwater harvesting and green roof solutions as well as activities to raise awareness, will also be put into practice.

"Climate Change Adaptation Strategies: Reducing the Risks of Flooding and Water Scarcity in Bartın will have a budget of 484 thousand 832 Euros and will last 18 months based on BARU's "Smart Logistics and Integrated Regional Applications" specialization area.

In the project where competent scientists in the field took part, Ass. Prof. Dr. Ercan Gemici, Ass. Prof. Dr. Harun Yetkin,  Ass. Prof. Dr. Evrim Güler, Prof. Dr. Ayhan Ateşoğlu, Ass. Prof. Dr. Aylin Alişan Yetkin, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mustafa Artar and Ass. Prof. Dr. Bayram Dündar will perform tasks in different disciplines.
