BARÜ Strengthens Healthy Living Awareness in Every Area Through Its Efforts to Combat Addiction
11 Eylül 2026
Bartın University (BARÜ) carries out awareness-raising activities in various areas to protect young people from addictions and support them in adopting healthy lifestyle habits.
The “Sports-Friendly Campus” and “Smoke-Free Campus” initiatives carried out by the Council of Higher Education (YÖK) play an important role in helping young people develop healthy lifestyle habits and protecting them against the risks of addiction. Within this framework, Bartın University (BARÜ) undertakes a wide range of activities, including training programmes, seminars, scientific research and initiatives to create smoke-free environments.
Having recently received the title of “Sports-Friendly Campus” for its Kutlubey Campus, BARÜ also contributes to efforts concerning the “Smoke-Free Campus” initiative highlighted by President of the Council of Higher Education Prof. Dr. Erol Özvar, as well as the fight against illegal betting and gambling addiction. By expanding sporting activities, diversifying social and cultural events, and encouraging students to take an active role in campus life, the University helps young people direct their energy towards meaningful goals.
A Healthy Campus Approach Is Extended to Efforts to Combat Addiction
At BARÜ, raising awareness among academic and administrative staff as well as students about healthy living and the fight against addiction is addressed through a holistic approach. Accordingly, with the support of BARÜ Rector Prof. Dr. Ahmet Akkaya and under the coordination of the Addiction Prevention Office, activities focusing on education, research, public awareness, and protective and preventive measures were carried out during the 2025–2026 academic year. Through field studies and infrastructure arrangements, the use of tobacco products within the campus was restricted to designated areas, thereby establishing a smoke-free zone across the campus.
Smoke-Free Campus Initiatives, Training Programmes and Seminars
In addition to the “Smoke-Free Campus” practices, measures are also being taken against contemporary risks such as online betting and gambling addiction, digital addictions, and screen and technology addiction. Throughout the year, thousands of students received training on “Types of Addiction and Combating Addiction,” while information on types of addiction, risk factors and methods of prevention was provided as part of İŞKUR’s Workforce Adaptation Program. In addition, activities focusing on online betting and gambling addiction as well as screen and technology addiction are organised through inter-institutional cooperation.
At BARÜ, where scientific studies on different forms of addiction are also conducted, 19 academics carry out research on subjects including substance use disorders, technology and internet addiction, cyberbullying and social media use. Courses addressing the fight against addiction are included in the academic curriculum, while students also contribute to awareness-raising activities through social responsibility projects.
Rector Akkaya stated that these initiatives, which support young people in building a healthy future, are among BARÜ’s priority areas, adding that efforts bringing together education, science and social life in the fight against addiction will continue.
