Bartın University (BARU) has initiated a program to raise disaster awareness in 24 villages at risk of floods and drought, organizing seminars in village coffeehouses to engage directly with local residents.

As part of the “Science Communication Office” project launched under the leadership of the Council of Higher Education (YÖK), BARU carried out its first fieldwork in cooperation with the Bartın Governorship Provincial Administration and Bartın Municipality. Aiming to bring science closer to society and communicate academic work more effectively to the public, the first efforts included visits to rural settlements with a history of disasters. Within the framework of the “Climate Change Adaptation Strategies: Reducing Flood and Water Scarcity Risks in Bartın” (BİRUS) Project, expert teams conducted seminars in village coffeehouses.

In the first stage of the project, BARU academics and students visited the villages of Kumluca Zafer, Arıt Aydınlar, and Ulus Kozanlı, meeting directly with citizens. Meetings covered topics such as preparation before floods, disaster management, the use of early warning systems, and post-crisis recovery processes.

Experts emphasized the risks triggered by sudden rainfall and climate change, warning that lack of knowledge in rural areas could have severe consequences. Measures against water scarcity, particularly rainwater harvesting, were also highlighted.

The activities included content not only for adults but also for children. With the motto “Science for All, from 7 to 77,” storybooks on disaster awareness were distributed to children, while informative materials were shared with all participants.
