BARÜ Contributes to Türkiye’s COP31 Process with Six Projects

Bartın University (BARÜ) will take part in the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP31), to be hosted by Türkiye, with six projects developed across different disciplines.
The project application process launched by the Council of Higher Education (YÖK) to strengthen the scientific mission of the 31st Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP31), which will be held in Antalya and hosted by Türkiye, has been completed. Within this scope, six innovative projects from Bartın University (BARÜ), covering climate change, sustainability, the environment, education, and disaster risk reduction, will be included in the COP31 process and contribute to climate change mitigation and adaptation efforts.
Six BARÜ Projects on Climate Action to Take Part in COP31
Among thousands of applications submitted by universities across Türkiye under various themes and categories, six projects from BARÜ were selected. These include Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mustafa Erkartal’s project titled “Development of Sustainable and Smart Membrane Systems for Carbon Dioxide Removal from Natural Gas Reserves” and Asst. Prof. Dr. Ercan Gemici’s project titled “Climate Change Adaptation Strategies: Reducing Flood and Water Scarcity Risks in Bartın,” both from the Faculty of Engineering, Architecture and Design, as well as Asst. Prof. Dr. Cevdet Gümüş’s “Feed The Future” project from Bartın Vocational School.
Sustainable Transportation, Disaster Risk Reduction and Inclusive Climate Education
Other selected projects include “Mapping Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) Areas in Türkiye’s Fire-Prone Basins Using the Collect Earth Method,” prepared by Prof. Dr. Ayhan Ateşoğlu and Res. Asst. Fidan Şevval Bulut from the Faculty of Forestry; “GreenRoute Logistics: A Green Route Planning Application for Road Transportation,” developed by Res. Asst. Dr. Fatma Akgün and Dursun Berkay Esen from the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences; and Lecturer Nihal Özdemir’s “Inclusive Climate Change Education Project for Students with Learning Difficulties” from the Faculty of Education.
The applications were evaluated in line with COP31’s ten priority themes. These included Zero Waste, Oceans and Seas, Food Security, Climate-Resilient Cities, Strengthening Climate Action, Youth and Education, Green Industrialization, Clean Energy Transition, Rio Synergy, and Dynamic and Resilient Health Systems. The selected projects are expected to provide academic contributions to Türkiye’s climate change mitigation and adaptation efforts.
BARÜ Rector Prof. Dr. Ahmet Akkaya congratulated everyone who contributed to the projects that will take part in the COP31 process and emphasized that BARÜ’s scientific studies in the fields of climate change and sustainability are of significant value at both national and international levels.
