A system measuring river levels, soil moisture, and precipitation is being established in Bartın

Through a project led by Bartın University (BARÜ), an "Intelligent Flood Warning System" is being set up in the Bartın River Basin, which will simultaneously measure river water levels, soil moisture, and precipitation, transmitting the data to stations.

Work continues within the scope of the "Climate Change Adaptation Strategies: Reducing Flood and Water Scarcity Risks in Bartın" (BİRUS) Project, which aims to reduce the risks of flooding and drought in Bartın due to climate change. In this project, where the Bartın Governorship Provincial Special Administration and Bartın Municipality are partners, smart systems are being installed to enhance the region’s adaptation to sudden changes in the water cycle of the Bartın River Basin.

An interdisciplinary approach is being employed

Fieldwork related to the installation of the "Intelligent Flood Warning System" involved inspections in the Arıt River and Gökırmak River basins. The work, led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ersin Alaybeyoğlu and Dr. Ercan Gemici from BARÜ, was conducted with the participation of Erdem Koç, Saffet Yıldız, and Talha Berk Arıkan from the Provincial Special Administration. In the first stage, discussions were held with the participation of local heads (muhtars) and villagers. The final locations of the stations will be determined based on Geographic Information System (GIS) analyses and field studies.

Data will be transmitted in real-time using Internet of Things (IoT) technology

The data collected by the Intelligent Flood Warning System, which simultaneously measures the river water level, soil moisture, and precipitation, will be transmitted to a data center using Internet of Things (IoT) technology. In this context, Dr. Evrim Güler and project engineers Furkan Ayaz and Mehmet Safa Aydın from the BİRUS project team completed the installation of the electrical, electronic, and communication networks for the prototype stations. Thus, the hardware and software components of the stations were integrated, establishing data collection and transmission systems.
